How this site handles your data

Last updated: March 13, 2026

Overview

This site helps you look up historical passes of crewed space stations over a location. To provide that functionality, the site uses third-party map and geocoding services and processes the coordinates you enter or select on the map.

If you do not consent to the required third-party data transfers, the site cannot be used.

What data is processed

Depending on how you use the site, the following data may be processed:

  • Your IP address and standard browser request metadata.
  • The location you type into the address search field.
  • The coordinates you enter manually or select by clicking on the map.
  • Your consent choice for third-party data transfers.
  • Your local UI preferences, such as theme and unit system.
  • Aggregate page view analytics and related technical request metadata.

Third-party services

This site depends on third-party services. When those services are used, data may be transmitted directly from your browser or through this server.

OpenFreeMap

Map display uses OpenFreeMap-hosted map styles and tile resources. When the map is loaded, your browser may send requests to OpenFreeMap infrastructure. Those requests can include your IP address, browser metadata, and normal technical connection data required to deliver map content.

Mapbox geocoding

If you use address search, your search text is sent to this site’s server and then forwarded to Mapbox’s geocoding API so matching locations can be returned. That means Mapbox receives the search query and technical request data from the server-side request.

Analytics

This site uses a self-hosted Plausible analytics instance served to measure aggregate usage such as page views.

When the analytics script is loaded, your browser sends technical request data such as your IP address, user agent, referrer, and the requested page URL to that self-hosted analytics service.

How location lookups work

If you enter coordinates or click on the map, those coordinates are used to query the backend services that calculate nearby historical passes. If you use address search, the address is first geocoded and the resulting coordinates are then used for the same pass lookup process.

Local storage in your browser

This site stores a small set of values in your browser:

  • Your consent to third-party data transfers is stored in a cookie.
  • Your preferred theme is stored in local storage.
  • Your preferred unit system is stored in local storage.

These values remain on your device until you clear them in your browser storage.

Legal basis

The site relies on your consent before loading the services that are necessary to show the map and perform address geocoding. Without that consent, the site is not made available because its core functionality depends on those services.

Retention

Local browser preferences remain stored until you remove them. Some data entered into the site, such as search queries or selected coordinates, may be stored in infrastructure or backend logs for a limited time for debugging and monitoring purposes and is automatically deleted after a short period. Analytics data handled by the self-hosted Plausible instance is retained only in aggregate form, without the possibility of identifying individual users. Third-party providers may have their own retention policies for the data they receive, which you can find in their respective privacy policies.

Your choices

  • You may decline consent, but then the site cannot be used.
  • You can clear stored consent and preferences through your browser storage settings.
  • You can avoid address search and use coordinates directly, but the map itself still relies on third-party map resources.
